The summer season may be drawing to a close but the fall brings with it a host of new exhibitions at art galleries all over West Hollywood! AOG intern Arlo spent this past week visiting a number of exhibitions and pulled together a list of the 5 they were most excited about this fall:

  1. Jeffrey Deitch

“Post Human” by various artists.

On view: September 12, 2024 - January 18, 2025

Hajime Sorayama

A well known figure in the contemporary art world, Jeffry Deitch’s latest exhibit at his eponymous Los Angeles gallery is giving new life to an old concept. Post Human was originally curated by Deitch in 1992, but the questions it raised about the blurring boundaries of organic and artificial are perhaps more relevant than ever. A staggering 41 artists have come together for an exhibition that is shocking, funny, sad and certainly worth a visit. Click to visit website.

  1. KP Projects

“As Viewed From Inside” by Jennybird Alcantara

On view: October 5 - November 2, 2024

Jennybird Alcantara

Jennybird Alcantara’s paintings filled me with a surreal feeling, as though I was looking at a fairy-tale through a distorted lens and seeing its darker side. Alcantara says her paintings exist “between a waking and dream state,” they use compositions evoking centuries old painting styles, but colors and objects unmistakable in their modernity. Alcantara’s blending of the comforting and the uncomfortable reveals much about our relationship with the natural world. Click to visit website.

  1. Tanya Bonakdar Gallery

“Hover Land Lover” by Lisa Williamson.

On view: September 7 - November 16, 2024

Lisa Williamson

The minimalist sculptures of Lisa Williamson contain exactly as much detail as is intended. The precision of her works are captivating, they simultaneously leave the viewer satisfied by their exactness, yet frustrated by their restraint. Williamson’s sculptures are designed to harmonize with the spaces they inhabit, so despite the meticulous minimalism the sculpture’s energy radiates beyond their physical boundaries. 1. Megan Mulrooney Gallery

“Fruiting Body” by Piper Bangs

On view: September 14 - October 26, 2024

Piper Bangs

Still life paintings are as old as the genre itself, but Piper Bangs sees them as ripe with opportunity. Her series of still lifes made me decidedly uneasy. They feature swollen fruits of strange colors and shapes that look like you could reach through and grab one. The forms are organic, lifelike but unlike any living thing I’ve ever seen. Bangs has mastered the art of the uncomfortable in this exhibition and viewing it in-person is a must. Click to visit website.

  1. Regen Projects

“Altanera, Preciosa y Orgullosa” by Aliza Nisenbaum.

On view: September 12 - October 26, 2024

Aliza Nisenbaum

Scenes of Salsa and Mariachi fill Aliza Nisenbaum’s canvases, but rather than feeling like a “captured” moment, the paintings feel like a window into her world. Part of Nisenbaum’s artistic process is getting to know her subjects, integrating into their world in an effort to see how it really is and to capture the beauty that exists in the everyday. Vibrant colors and dynamic poses fill the paintings with a sense of life and movement that is hard to capture in such a medium. Click to visit website.
