Holy Cannoli is a continuation of a series of works using the child-like composition of a smile to create visual amalgamation portraits. The paintings within this series center on the emotional whiplash of being an American, female painter in the 21st century with all the baggage that entails. Appropriated images within the paintings are sourced from historical paintings, television shows, social media, and Google fever dreams while contrasting symbols and shapes unfold improvisationally. Resolution and application of images and materials fluctuate from trompe-l’oeil and photorealism to textural impasto and squeezing paint from the tube in order to play with authenticity and truthfulness in the deconstructed portraits. The giant smile in the composition then muddies the tone and read of the paintings. The viewer ultimately has to wade through the surface level veneer of the smile and decide what's literally going on, whether or not to trust my narrative, and finally how resolution of images shape perception and character.
