The Loewe Foundation has revealed the shortlist for its 2024 Craft Prize, highlighting 30 artists whose innovative works will be showcased at Palais de Tokyo in Paris from May 15th to June 9th. The prize winner will be chosen by a jury of 12 esteemed professionals from design, architecture, journalism, criticism, and museum curatorship. The recipient will receive a €50,000 (around $53,577) award, with the announcement scheduled for May 14th during the exhibition’s inauguration.
Chosen from over 3,900 submissions worldwide, the finalists for the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize work in a diverse array of mediums, from ceramics to textiles, hailing from 16 countries. “Craft is the essence of Loewe,” said Jonathan Anderson, creative director at Loewe. “As a house, we are about craft in the purest sense of the word. That is where our modernity lies and it will always be relevant.”
Among the finalists, there are several artists working primarily with textiles including Mali-based Ange Dakouo, Netherlands-based Saar Scheerlings, and fiber artist and basket maker Ferne Jacobs. Meanwhile, selected artists who work with ceramics include Andrés Anza, Raven Halfmoon, Ki-Ra Kim, and Ken Eastman. Other artists work with multiple craft disciplines: Nigerian artist Ozioma Onunzulike submitted a ceramic tapestry weaving together thousands of clay palm kernels.
