SPRING/BREAK ART SHOW RETURNS TO NEW YORK CITY WITH !WILD CARD! A ‘REMIXED RETROSPECTIVE’

Mark Westall, FAD Magazine, August 22, 2023

SPRING/BREAK Art Show returns to New York City during Armory Arts Week from September 6th – 11th, 2023, marking its fourth iteration at 625 Madison Avenue in Midtown East.

Staged across two floors of the checkerboard former-Ralph Lauren offices, the 2023 edition will bring together over 110 exhibits from 150+ curators.

For this year’s theme, the fair will be ‘doubling down on 11’s’ — 11 themes and years, to be precise  — with a card-counting homage to its own history. !WILD CARD! pulls from the lexicon of tarot and traditional playing cards, allowing curators to pick from all 11 past SPRING/BREAK themes and populate them with brand-new artists.

This ‘remixed retrospective’ of past themes with new artworks follows the SECRET SHOW pop-up during Frieze New York in May — an exhibition that exclusively consisted of past participants of the SPRING/BREAK shows, curated primarily by fair founders Ambre Kelly and Andrew Gori. Doubling down here too on their history, this exhibition was held in their original haunts at the OLD SCHOOL in NoLiTa.

Continuing this process of salon curation initiated last spring, the fall fair will for the first time offer an ‘Artist Spotlight’ section, where artists were able to submit directly for a position within a salon show curated by Kelly & Gori. The resulting exhibit further encapsulates the !WILD CARD! theme, referencing the past exhibitions the founders curated that anticipated the SPRING/BREAK model that was to come.

In 2017, SPRING/BREAK launched it’s biannual IMMERSIVE program, with large-scale sculptural installations at the BKYLN IMMERSIVE in May 2017, followed by TIMES SQUARE IMMERSIVE, a Times Square Plaza takeover with monumental sculptures created onsite in each public plaza of Times Square in March 2019, and UPSTATE IMMERSIVE in 2021 with ten unique sculptures to create a sculpture garden in Poughkeepsie, NY during Upstate Arts Weekend. Gori and Kelly have new projects forming in the film and tv landscape and in the published written word in 2023. thetheyco.com
