Once again, the summer has slipped away and we find ourselves embracing – or perhaps bracing for – a return to more structured schedules. Maybe a bit of both. To mark the change of seasons, we have reaped a crop of engaging new photography exhibits and events throughout the Boston metro region and beyond. As always, we list them geographically for your planning convenience and update regularly during the month, so please feel free to check back whenever you’d like to boost your spirits.


BOSTON PROPER

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston – The Stillness of Things: Photographs from the Lane Collection will present nearly 60 innovative photographs grouped thematically across two galleries. The special treat is that they are all departures from the traditional still life and span the entire history of photography. Featuring photographs from the 1840s by William Henry Fox Talbot to the work of contemporary artists such as David Hilliard (above and Feature Image), Adam Fuss, Kenro Izu, Abelardo Morell, and Olivia Parker, the exhibit will be on view through February 27th, 2023.

808 Gallery at Boston University – Jaina Cipriano’s “Dreamscapes: Finding the Light Through Immersive Design” presents dramatic photographic scenarios alongside immersive set designs in which the viewer is invited to create their own moments of vivacious boldness and contrasting vulnerability. Cipriano’s work explores themes of struggle, growth and self-discovery with ebullient energy. On view from September 6th – October 13th, 2022, there will be an Opening Reception on Thursday, September 8th from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Robert Klein Gallery – A solo show of Lois Conner’s vintage gelatin silver landscapes and platinum prints, Flat Earth, is curated by Leandro Villaro (Penumbra Foundation) and features twenty-three multi-panel and seventeen individual prints. Dedicated to the school of slow looking, Conner’s images are at once sweeping and detailed, decontextualized and specific, sumptuous and serene. LAST CHANCE! On view September 14th and 15th, 2022.

Fountain Street Gallery – A two-woman show Awakening features photographs by Rebecca Skinner that explore decayed materials and abandoned places, awakening viewers to their inherent beauty and emotion. Her work is complemented by Miller Opie’s sculptures of found animal bones, feathers and oriental bittersweet, giving the discarded new life. On view through September 25th, 2022, there will be an Artist Reception on Friday, September 9th from 6:00 – 8:00pm and an Artist Talk on Saturday, September 17th from 2:00 – 3:00pm.

Abigail Ogilvy Gallery – Clint Baclawski’s five-panel, twenty-five foot wide, scrolling photographic installation Departure conveys the majesty of Grand Teton National Park at awe-inspiring scale. As the image scrolls, it morphs from a seemingly idyllic landscape picture to the negative in an almost apocalyptic red at the end. The scroll waves slightly, mimicking the bend and movement of Snake River, which winds through the National Park for 50 miles. On view through October 16th, 2022, there will be a Meet the Artist Reception on Friday, September 9th from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

In conjunction with the popular “PRC Speaker Series” featuring Michael Joseph on Wednesday, September 21st, 2022, photographs from Lost and Found will be on view at the fp3 Gallery from September 9th – November 18th, 2022, with a free public Reception on Wednesday, October 19th from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

THE BURBS

Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, MA – Founded by the late photographer Judy Sherrod in Texas, “Shootapalooza” is a rambunctious collective of mostly women photographers whose experimental work aims to encourage each other’s creativity. Shootapalooza: A Murmuration of Artists features the theme of “Enlighten” with a broad swath of photographic methods from the group’s artists. On view from September 8th – October 2nd, 2022. On Saturday, September 10th, there will be a Cyanotype Workshop from 10:00am – 2:00pm, followed by a free public reception with many of the artists from 4:00 – 6:00pm.

Also at the Griffin Museum – In the Griffin Gallery, Harvey Stein’s Then and There: Mardi Gras 1979 showcases vintage SX-70 Polaroids that are colorful in every sense of the word. Stein will give an Artist Talk and Book Signing on Friday, September 9th from 6:00 – 8:00pm. In the Griffin Atelier Gallery, Rachel Portesi’s Standing Still explores motherhood, aging and femininity utilizing Polaroid, wet-plate collodion, film and 3-D imagery. Portesi will conduct a Portrait Studio on the Griffin Terrace on Sunday, September 11th from 1:00 – 4:00pm and will give an Online Artist Talk on Thursday, September 22nd from 7:00 – 8:00pm.

Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA – Rosamond Purcell: Nature Stands Aside is the first retrospective of this Boston-based photographer and conceptual artist who has influenced Mark Dion and Sally Mann among others. Working alongside paleontologists, anthropologists and other scholars, Purcell explores the human drive to collect and inspect in an effort to understand the world. On view through December 31st, 2022. Also at the Addison, Harry Benson: Four Stories offers a dive into the legendary photojournalist’s archive, emphasizing his coverage of the building of the Berlin Wall, the Beatle’s first American tour, the James Meredith March Against Fear and the Robert F. Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, MA – Ron Rosenstock’s World in Color presents saturated studies from global travels of this the central Massachusetts based photographer. Known primarily for his black and white pictures and overseas workshops, this will be the first time the photographer presents his color work. On view from September 17th, 2022 through March 15th 2023.

Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), Salem – Power and Perspective: Early Photography in China explores how the camera transformed perceptions of 19th-century China through more than 130 extraordinarily rare photographs accompanied by paintings, decorative arts, and prints. Exhibit co-curator Stephanie Hueon Tung, PEM’s Byrne Family Curator of Photography lends perspective on the show: “Photography has never been a neutral technology of documentation; who and what gets captured and the stories that these photographs tell is a function of power.” The show incorporates work from a collaboration with current emerging photographers in China, who responded to images in the exhibit with works that offer their personal insights into China today. On view from from September 24, 2022 through April 2, 2023.

Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts (RICPA), Providence – Two exhibitions focusing on Cuba will share the gallery walls: Cuban Overture: the Other Side of the Mirror features the photographs of Daniel Martinez (above), a young Cuban-born photographer whose psychologically nuanced work has caught attention at MoMA and VOGUE. Cuba in Parallel pairs the work of American photographer Paul M. Murray and the work of Cuban photographer Adrián Juan Espinosa, presenting visions that underline our shared humanity.  Both exhibitions are curated by Cuban author Juan Carlos Mejías. LAST CHANCE! On view through September 9th, 2022.

Coming next to RICPA – The ballet and exhibition Orchis was inspired by the delicate petals of an orchid after they had fallen from the plant. The artist A. Cemal Ekin photographed the petals along with the dancers from the ballet to bring this multi-media project to life. The exhibit will feature photographs and video clips from the live ballet. Opening with a reception from 5 to 8m on September 15th, and on view through Friday October 9th, 2022.

Cove Street Arts, Portland – The exquisite landscapes by Jim Nickelson in his solo show Annals of the Former World are a “testimony to the wonder of the natural world as we found it, and serves as my record of this world for my own daughter and future generations, both what we had and what we lost, an elegy for a world that will never be the same.” Curated by Bruce Brown, the exhibit will be on view through September 24th, 2022.

Vermont Center for Photography, Brattleboro – Co-curators Joshua Farr and Davida Carta discovered works that explore identity among their 2022 Open Juried Exhibit submissions. They bring together nine artists whose work raises questions around not only identity, but gender and family history as they relate to place.
